Mine rescue service

Numerous regeneration devices, resuscitation equipment, communication and gas measurement technology bear witness to the high technical complexity of underground mine rescue operations. The list of victims of Wismut AG's most serious mining accident in Niederschlema shows just how dangerous rescue operations are. The Wismut Mining Association erected a memorial stone in Niederschlema where 33 miners died in a fire disaster in July 1953. The headframe of shaft 250 was once located at this site.

In addition to honoring the miners who died in the fire disaster, the memorial also commemorates all those miners who lost their lives as a result of occupational diseases. The most common cause of death was silicosis, or pneumoconiosis. Every year, former miners and relatives of miners who died in accidents meet to pay tribute to the dead. The honoring commemoration is the start of the Bad Schlema Miners' Day, which always takes place on the first Saturday in July.
